A post about typing speed and nothing else
How to improve your typing speed in three super easy steps.
- Start thinking about putting yourself out there, creatively, say with a very personal blog
- Question all of your life choices at each and every step of creating said blog
- Get struck by the earth-shattering realisation that what truly holds you back is your somewhat average typing speed
Now, let's see how this all works.
Step 1 ranges from the very first day you start thinking about your creative work until the day you actually take the first swing at it. This phase can take minutes...
...or you can stay stuck here for all eternity. Yay!
Step 2 is particularly easy for people who are naturally good at self-doubt like me. Aim for deep internal turmoil. Here are a few questions and thoughts to get you started: Who am I to create content? What do I know that hasn’t been shared a thousand times over? I’m no writer, I don’t have any specific skills, I don’t have a unique life that is worth sharing. So what’s the point? Nobody wants this and nobody cares, right?
Yay² !
Step 3 is where all comes together. Use the despair and resistance you've developed in step 1 and 2 and pour this newly-found energy into something fun!
And what's more fun than your fingers to develop a life of their own?
Typing is essential for a writer, is it not? Typing fast will definitely make you stand out and look oh so cool. People will definitely be impressed by your wpm. Right? Riiiiight ?
In case you want to embark with me on that wild ride, here's what I'd actually recommend:
Practice every day and prioritise accuracy over speed. Use all of your fingers (even that damn pinkie). Use platforms such as keybr and monkeytype, they're awesome and free.
First few days will be tough, and you will curse and yell at your fingers. There will be doubts. Do not, under any circumstances, revert to your old style of typing. You're on this journey now.
And talking about journeys, most of them are not linear. Procrastination, fear and self-doubt can and will stand in your way. Sometimes they'll stall you. Sometimes they'll bring you to a full stop. And sometimes they'll take you on a lovely side quest.
Was there a more direct way for me to start my blog?
Absolutely.
Do I regret taking the scenic route?
'fraid not.
